型材按使用部門分類有鐵路用型材（鋼軌、魚尾板、道岔用軌、車輪、輪箍）、汽車用型材（輪輞、輪胎擋圈和鎖圈）、造船用型材（L型鋼、球扁鋼、Z字鋼、船用窗框鋼）、結構和建筑用型材（H型鋼、工字鋼、槽鋼、角鋼、吊車鋼軌、窗框和門框用材、鋼板樁等）、礦山用鋼（U型鋼、槽幫鋼、礦用工字鋼、刮板鋼等）、機械制造用異型材等。這使得H型鋼的焊接拼接比工字鋼操作簡單，單位重量的力學性能更好，可以節(jié)省大量的材料和施工時間。按斷面尺寸大小分類。
